Curriculum
Published 2012
This curriculum reflects a developmental approach to postgraduate medical education. Under the curriculum, foundation doctors have to demonstrate that they are competent in a number of areas including communication and consultation skills, patient safety and team work, as well as the more traditional elements of medical training.
The framework for the structured two-year training programme gives foundation doctors exposure to a range of career placements across a broad spectrum of specialties, including accident & emergency, obstetrics & gynaecology and anaesthetics.
The Foundation Programme Curriculum is available to download from http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/pages/home/keydocs.
Foundation Programme Curriculum 2012 Resource
This additional resource aims to primarily assist foundation doctors in improving their knowledge and understanding of the generic and clinical topics as set out in the Foundation Programme Curriculum 2010; it is important to note however that this resource does not provide additional information underpinning every element of becoming a successful doctor. This resource is not exhaustive but highlights national guidance and protocols available to support each of the Curriculum’s outcomes.
The Foundation Programme Curriculum 2012 Resource is available from http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/index.asp?page=home/keydocs#c&rg.
Reference Guide
Published 2012
The Reference Guide provides guidance to deaneries and foundation schools about the structures and systems required to support the delivery of the third edition of the FP Curriculum.
It is a companion document to the FP Curriculum and should be used in conjunction with it.
The Reference Guide is available to download from http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/pages/home/keydocs.
Learning Portfolio
Foundation doctors within STFS use the UK Foundation Medicine e-Portfolio developed by NES (NHS Education Scotland). F1s are issued with a username and password on entry to STFS.
The e-portfolio is the record of a foundation doctor’s achievements and evidence demonstrating completed outcomes as specified by the GMC. It is essential that foundation doctors populate the e-portfolio with supervised learning events, achievements and other evidence as it will be used to inform the end of year report to enable the foundation achievement of competency document to be completed.
The e-portfolio may also be used during interviews for appointment to core or specialty training.
See http://www.nhseportfolios.org for further details.
The Trainee Doctor (GMC)
The GMC document The Trainee Doctor sets out the standards and outcomes for postgraduate medical training including foundation training and is available to download from http://www.gmc-uk.org/education/postgraduate/standards_and_guidance.asp.
Good Medical Practice (GMC)
Good Medical Practice sets out the principles and values on which good practice is founded; these principles together describe medical professionalism in action. The guidance is addressed to doctors, but it is also intended to let the public know what they can expect from doctors.
Good Medical Practice (GMC) can be downloaded from http://www.gmc-uk.org/guidance/good_medical_practice.asp
