Accommodation |
F1 trainees may apply to live in hospital accommodation should they wish. Accommodation comprises self-contained studios costs of which were £605 per month during 2009/10 but which will be reviewed in advance of August 2010 programmes commencing. |
Shadowing |
The shadowing experience provides the opportunity for students to work along side the FY1 from whom they will be taking over from. They gain an insight into the role and responsibilities of a junior doctor, have first hand experience of working with other members of the team, communicating with patients and developing an understanding of how the NHS generally works. |
Tasters |
All F2 trainees have the opportunity to do a ‘taster’ week of their choice in any specialty within the Trust, or outside the Trust if necessary. |
Teaching Programme |
Since August 2008 we have had 51 F1 and 39 F2 trainees at King’s. The majority of F1 rotations comprise four 3 month placements, whilst some F1 and all F2 rotations consist of three 4 month placements. All F2 rotations include an Accident and Emergency placement. There is protected, bleep free teaching for all F1’s at lunchtime once a week, in addition to which there are several half-day workshops. The F2 teaching programme includes ALS, mini-ATLS etc., a two day ‘F2 Professional Development’ course and access to a multitude of specialty teaching programmes across the Trust. There is a substantial team within the Department of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (PGMDE), several of whom work almost exclusively for the Foundation Training Programme. Although we have a large number of Foundation Trainees, we pride ourselves on looking after the individual needs of each of them. Central to this is the role of the Clinical Facilitator. |
Simulation |
Simulation training will be provided in collaboration Guys and St Thomas’ (GSTT) in a dedicated simulator training facility at GSTT. |
Social Activities |
We have a very pro-active committee who are keen for those subscribing to have plenty of opportunity to socialise and unwind, including a football society, and monthly evening events. |
Any Additional Information |
Our commitment to training was demonstrated in the 2008 PMETB National trainee survey, pmetb.org.uk/fileadmin/user/QA/Trainee_Survey/ National_Survey_of_Trainees_2007_Summary_Report_20080723-Final.pdf in which F2 trainees at King’s recommended their posts more highly than at any other Trust in London. |
