Overview of Trust

Postgraduate Centre

This is located in the purpose built Education Centre which is located on Level 5 in the Kingston Surgical Centre. This comes with a state of the art audio-visual equipment facilities. The centre has two Lecture Theatres which can be opened up into one which will hold up to 150 people. There are eight other seminar rooms all different sizes and all come with A V equipment and smart boards. One of the rooms has a video conference availability and is used regularlary. There are also three clinical teaching rooms, which comprise of resus room, mock ward and clinical skills room, which are used for all clinical teaching within the Trust.

IT Facilities

Kingston hospital has an excellent IT department and provides online and telephonic support for all hospital IT needs. Kingston hospital has Winpath and PACS system to support radiology and clinical laboratory investigations and results. Kingston hospital will go live with CRS (care records service) from September 2009.

Doctors’ Mess

The Doctors Mess is located on level 2 within the Kingston Surgical Centre next to the restaurant. There are 6 computer stations and a kitchen area provisions are provided from ISS and the cost is deducted from the Doctor’s Mess account monthly. There is a large seating area with a TV which has Sky connected the subscription for this facility is also paid from the Doctors Mess account. The room gets cleaned daily.

Kingston Hospital is a 520-bed acute general hospital, located in an attractive part of Surrey, within easy reach of Central London, Richmond Park, the river Thames, the historic Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames, and open countryside.
Kingston town centre has a large shopping area and plenty of restaurants some of which are located by the river Thames. There are two or three nightclubs and plenty of pubs and wine bars.
Richmond Park is opposite the Hospital and you can get to Richmond, Ham and Roehampton through the park.

Parking Arrangements

If you wish to have a car-parking permit, this has to be applied for and the cost of this is taken monthly from your salary. The permits allow for you to park in the staff car park only and not in the pay and display areas.
There are also facilities for people who cycle in and this information can be obtained from support services.

Kingston Hospital has links to Kingston University. We serve a population of about 320,000 in Kingston, Esher, Richmond, Roehampton, Putney and other parts of South West London. We provide a full range of diagnostic and treatment services and have a national reputation for innovative developments in healthcare, particularly in ‘patient-focused’ care, maternity services, and day surgery. A new  Accident & Emergency department opened in December 2001.The hospital’s adult acute medical and orthopaedic beds are housed in Esher Wing; this wing also houses the main suite of eight operating theatres. Roehampton Wing, adjacent to Esher Wing, is home to the Medical Assessment Centre (MAC). The new specialist cancer unit, the Sir William Rous Unit opened to patients in Spring 2008.

A brand-new construction, called the Kingston Surgical Centre, opened in 2007.  It houses the surgical wards, physiotherapy department, new restaurant and doctors’ mess. It also contains our brand-new library and new Education Centre with state-of-the-art teaching and presentation technology, and 24 hour access to the internet.

Overview of Foundation Training within the Trust

Accommodation

A limited amount of accommodation is available on a first come, first served basis, at a cost of £350 per month. The long-standing staff accommodation has recently been refurbished and has been supplemented further by the provision of newly built accommodation on site. These latter, modern rooms include both en suite and shared facilities accommodation and are situated at the north-east end of the site no more than a hundred yards or so from the centre of the hospital.

Shadowing

All new F1s are strongly encouraged to come in June/July to do a shadowing placement before starting in August.

Tasters

Guidance on tasters is available.  Each FY2 trainee is strongly advised to arrange a 5-day ‘taster’ programme in a speciality of his or her choice

Teaching Programme

Our Foundation Programme is trainee-centred, competency-assessed, service-based, quality assured, structured and streamlined. We provide robust career planning and guidance for all our trainees.

In 2010, we will have 36 FY1 posts and 30 FY2 posts, all linked to South Thames Foundation School. All F1 posts are currently banded 1A. F2 posts vary – many have at least one 4-month placement (some have 2) which are unbanded. Further information about our posts, including trainee comments and job descriptions, can be found on:

Simulation

The London Deanery currently arranges a full day of simulation training for all Foundation trainees at Kingston

In 2008, 92% of our F2 doctors obtained their 1st choice speciality training programme. We have a strong tradition of successfully integrating junior doctor training and large volumes of clinical work. Our foundation doctors are hard-working, dedicated, enthusiastic, vibrant and fun-loving.
