Postgraduate Centre

The Trust provides training opportunities for all staff within the Trust.  There is regular lunchtime teaching in the Postgraduate Education Centre and a Clinical Skills room in the Postgraduate Education Centre. 

Library Facilities

There is a library at East Surrey Hospital providing access to traditional services and resources as well as PCs with internet access on a 24 hour basis.

Local Amenities/ Attractions

East Surrey Hospital is situated 2 miles south of Redhill town Centre. The towns of Redhill and Reigate have excellent shopping, entertainment and sports facilities.  Local areas of interest include the North Downs for walking and biking, flying at Redhill Aerodrome, horse racing at nearby Lingfield Park all weather course, theatres and cinemas in Redhill, Reigate and Crawley. 

On site accommodation is available and there is a charge for this, at the present time we are unable to give you the charging details as the accommodation is being refurbished and the rental costs will be updated from April 2009.

Transport Links

There is a fast train service from Redhill to Central London (approximately 30 minutes) and 15 minutes to Gatwick Airport.  There is easy access to the coast at Brighton and other parts of Surrey and the Southeast via J8 of the M25 motorway at Reigate.  Local Public transport (buses) will take you to most of the surrounding areas (Dorking, Redhill, Caterham, Crawley, Horley etc).  Redhill station is approximately 10/15 minutes bus journey from East Surrey Hospital.

Teaching Programme

There are 30 Foundation Year 1 trainees (FY1), all based at East Surrey Hospital.  Ten of which rotate through General Internal medicine, four which rotate through Geriatrics,10 which rotate through General Surgery, one which rotates through Emergency Medicine, two which rotate through Emergency Medicine/MAU (two months in both departments), one which rotates through Acute Medicine (MAU), two which rotate through Critical Care.

There are 30 Foundation Year 2 trainees posts (FY2) which consist of six which rotate through General Practice (some of  the sites for the General Practice posts are not based close to the hospital and you may need to use public transport or have the use of a car), ten which rotate through the Emergency Department, two which rotate through Obstetrics and Gynaecology, two which rotate through Paediatrics, two which rotate through Adult Psychiatry (sites for the Psychiatry posts are not based at East Surrey Hospital), three which rotate through Geriatrics, two which rotate through Trauma and Orthopaedics, one which rotates through Acute Medicine, one which rotates through Surgery, one which rotates through General Internal Medicine.

Some outpatient clinics are held in hospitals in Crawley, Horsham and Dorking.  The F2 Psychiatry posts (two in total) are based in Crawley and Dorking.  The Crawley post is based in a newly built Mental Health Hospital based at Langley Green, Crawley.  The other Psychiatry post is based in Dorking.  The F2 General Practice posts are based in the surrounding areas to East Surrey Hospital, due to the distance you may need to have the use of a car to access some of these sites, however some can be accessed through public transport.

These posts are all approved by the KSS Deanery and Foundation Schools.  The Director of Medical Education is Dr Ivor Lewis, the Foundation Programme Year 1 Director is Miss Fiona O’Sullivan, and the Foundation Programme Year 2 Director is Miss Catherine Wykes.   The programme includes formal weekly teaching session, structured appraisal (mini-e-pat) and work place based assessments.
